Everything you need to know about Phentermine (Adipex), the appetite suppressant.
There are not many drugs prescribed for fat loss and if there are, these drugs tend to be pulled from the market quickly after realising the dangerous side effects. However, there is one drug that is still prescribed for weight loss. It is Phentermine.
Phentermine has been around since the 50s, but it was only in the 90s when it garnered the most attention. It is a potent appetite suppressant. In the 90s a study came out introducing the use of phentermine and fenfluramine. This combination was found to be more effective than diet and exercise at promoting weight loss. However, later it was found that fenfluramine was causing heart valve defects and was soon no longer available. Phentermine is still available, even to this day. It requires a script to be purchased because it is an amphetamine derivative.
What is phentermine?
As mentioned above it is an amphetamine derivative (it is similar to drugs like Meth, Ritalin etc). It has potent appetite supressing effects. It is available as a prescription medication for obese individuals. Studies on phentermine’s ability to aid in weight loss show that it mildly aids in weight loss. It has garnered a bit of popularity from bodybuilders looking to lose a lot of weight before a show.
What are the side effects?
Side effects are similar to those found from other amphetamines. This includes increases in heart rate, increases in blood pressure, insomnia, nervousness, visual disturbances, nausea, diarrhoea, dry mouth, headache, and euphoria. It is possible to overdose on phentermine which can be fatal.
How is it used?
It is taken on an empty stomach at a dose of 37.5mg, 1 hour before breakfast. Some use a dose of 18.75mg a day or twice a day. It should never be taken before sleep or within 6 hours preceding sleep due to its stimulatory nature. It is taken for approximately 4 weeks. Sometimes, it might be taken for a maximum of 12 weeks. The use in bodybuilding is the same.
This is just a brief overview of one of the prescribed medications for obesity, Phentermine.
